Purpose of Position:

Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs & Research, the Dean will be responsible for leading all activities of the NCI School of Business. They will provide strategic direction, academic leadership, and strong management to the School in collaboration with the Vice Deans.

The Dean must effectively lead, inspire, and manage a diverse academic staff while advancing the School and NCI’s mission and reputation.

The Dean will also play a key role in income generation for the School through new programme development, ensuring that resources are aligned with NCI’s strategic goals and values. As a member of NCI’s senior leadership, the Dean will contribute to achieving the College’s strategic objectives and addressing policy and operational matters.

The Dean will hold a professorial academic rank and will be responsible for fostering excellence in teaching and research at national and international levels.

Key Responsibilities:

The Dean of the School of Business will be responsible for:

  • Leading the academic faculty in delivering a high-quality, innovative curriculum that aligns with industry needs and accreditation standards.
  • Fostering excellence in teaching, research, and service, by developing resources, talent, and opportunities for knowledge transfer with industry partners.
  • Ensuring quality assurance processes are in place for learning, teaching, and assessment, while maintaining accreditation standards.
  • Promoting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Managing and overseeing national and international collaborations, strengthening connections within NCI and external partnerships.
  • Developing strong alumni networks to support the School’s reputation, student mentorship, and funding.
  • Contributing to Academic Council and Executive Group meetings, aligning the School’s initiatives with the College’s strategic goals.
  • The successful applicant will also collaborate cross-college with the National College of Ireland’s Early Learning Initiative, fostering partnerships and contributing to shared educational goals.

The Candidate:

Essential Requirements:

  • A PhD in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of proven experience in academic leadership and management within higher education.

  • Academic Expertise: In-depth knowledge in the field of Business and other relevant disciplines and a strong research background, enabling informed decision-making and curriculum development.
  • Leadership Skills: Ability to inspire, motivate, and lead faculty and staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing academic environment.
  • Strategic Thinking: Capacity to develop and implement long-term strategic plans aligned with institutional goals, anticipating challenges and opportunities in the higher education landscape.
  • Effective Communication: Proficiency in articulating ideas clearly and persuasively to diverse stakeholders, including faculty, students, and external partners.
  • Change Management: Skills in guiding teams through transitions, promoting adaptability, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the college.
  • Relationship Building: Ability to establish and maintain strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including industry, alumni, and accrediting bodies.
  • Quality Assurance: Understanding of accreditation processes and quality assurance frameworks, ensuring academic programmes meet established standards.
  • Financial Acumen: Competence in budget management, resource allocation, and research funding.
  • Cultural Competency: Awareness and appreciation of diversity, promoting an inclusive environment for students and staff.
  • Mentorship and Development: Commitment to supporting the professional growth of faculty and staff through mentoring, training, and development opportunities.
  • Evidence of external networks in academic and business fields

Essential:

  • Knowledge of the Athena Swan Charter and experience promoting gender equality, diversity, and equity.

Conditions of Service

Tenure: Permanent contract of employment.

Salary: €93,182 - €124,863.

Pension: Defined Contribution Pension Scheme.

Probation: Subject to a six-month probationary period.

Location: Based at Mayor Street Lower, International Financial Services Centre, Dublin 1.

Working Hours: Minimum of 35 hours per week (five-day week), with potential evening and weekend work as required.

Annual Leave: The annual leave allowance is 34 days.

Shortlisting

HR draft up the shortlisting documents and provide the initial screening to determine if a person meets the essential criteria of the competition. A shortlisting panel is generally made up of two senior grade staff members from the relevant department for which the role is being recruited.

Sharing of your data

Where you have been successfully shortlisted for a post, each interview panel member will be furnished with a copy of the relevant information of those who will be attending interview in order that they can review applications in advance of the interview process. All such information will be returned to NCI and shredded following the competition process.
