Plaudits for NCI’s School of Business

At National College of Ireland, we are proud to share some of the recent achievements celebrated in the School of Business.

Theresa Mulcahy, Assistant Professor, BA in Accounting and Finance Programme Director at National College of Ireland, has been awarded this year's IAFA Doctoral Funding Award from the Irish Accounting and Finance Association. This funding is sponsored by Chartered Accountants Ireland Education Trust and follows on the back of Theresa's recent presentation of her doctoral study at the Irish Accounting and Finance Association’s Doctoral Colloquium, at the Ulster University Belfast in June. Theresa’s PhD research focuses on institutional logics in family firms.

“I was delighted to win this funding which will go towards my interview transcription costs and 2025 conference fees. This is a great achievement for me as a PhD student. It has put a huge smile on my face, and it has provided me with fresh motivation and determination as I progress towards the final stages of my PhD.” ~ Theresa Mulcahy, Assistant Professor, BA in Accounting and Finance Programme Director at National College of Ireland.

National College of Ireland’s BA in Accounting and Finance features a blend of specialised accounting and finance subjects together with general business subjects, giving you an excellent foundation in leadership and management as well as a critical and methodical approach to problem-solving and decision-making in a financial context.
This course is ideal for students who have an interest in the business world and who are looking to move into the international world of accounting and finance.

Dr Corina Sheerin, alongside Prof Maura Sheehan (Edinburgh Napier University) has been awarded the 2024 University Forum for Human Resource Development (UFHRD) honorarium for their research project entitled “Diversity, Inclusion and Firm Performance: A Systematic Literature Review of Human Resource Management, Ethics, CSR, Management and Finance Journals.”

Using a systematic literature review (SLR) approach, this research examines how the relationship between diversity, inclusion and firm performance is represented over a 23-year timespan in three different scholarly domains: Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Management, Human Resource Management (HRM), and Finance.
Dr Corina Sheerin explains that this research speaks directly to the work of Human Resource Development (HRD) critical scholars such as Bierema and Cseh (2003), Bierema (2020) and Callahan and Elliot (2020) and addresses the important call for “an onus on HRD to recognize the significance of gender and diversity in organizations, and to question HRD’s role in perpetuating or misrecognizing gendered power relations in theory and practice” (Callahan and Elliot (2020, 470)).

“Both Prof Sheehan and I were delighted to win the 2024 UFHRD honorarium. Examining issues of social justice and in particular equality and inclusion are essential in creating an inclusive and diverse society. We are privileged to be able to undertake this research and incredibly grateful to the UFHRD for their support of our endeavour.” ~ Dr Corina Sheerin, Lecturer in Finance at National College of Ireland.
