A Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Digital and Business Skills (DABS) that has been jointly developed by curriculum and academic teams in National College of Ireland and City of Dublin Education and Training Board (City of Dublin ETB), is amongst 17 new tertiary courses coming on stream for the 2025/2026 academic year.
This significant expansion of the tertiary degree programme was announced this week by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless.
A total of 41 courses will be available this year, with 27 now open for applications, and a further 14 launching on 28 March.
A college place without the points race
Minister Lawless said:
“Enrolments in tertiary programmes surged by 68% in 2024, showing the strong demand for this flexible pathway to a degree so I am delighted to announce the continued investment and further expansion of these courses.
“What makes this option so wonderful, is that students can now begin their studies at a local further education institute before seamlessly progressing to higher education, without relying on the CAO points system.”
Tanya Jones, Deputy Director of the National Tertiary Office, said:
“Tertiary degrees provide a transformative opportunity for students who might have previously thought higher education was out of reach. By breaking down traditional barriers and creating additional access routes, these programmes enable more students to pursue their dream careers.
“Talented students are now able to fully embrace their potential without the constraints of points. In 2025, an increasing number of tertiary pathways are being introduced, catering not only to recent school leavers but also to those returning to education. This expansion ensures that education is more inclusive and accessible, empowering more people to achieve their goals and reach their full potential.”
Many pathways to a degree
Originally launched in 2023 with 152 students across 13 programmes, tertiary courses have grown rapidly. In 2024, 222 students enrolled in 19 programmes.
Among the 17 new courses offered this year, the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Digital and Business Skills (DABS) is a future-focused four-year degree programme designed to equip students with a broad range of employability competencies, preparing them for a successful career in the everchanging business and digital world.
The programme combines academic study with real-world workplace learning, fostering adaptability and resilience. Students will have access to structured supports throughout the programme in the form of learning support, financial support and workplace mentor support. Integrated workplace learning features throughout all four years of the programme.
Applicants can demonstrate their ability in many ways, including 5 Leaving Cert or Leaving Cert Vocational passes, or a Level 5 QQI award in a relevant area. DABS is also a progression route from the PTECH (Pathways in Technology) programme. In the case of mature learners (21 years and over), there are no formal academic entry requirements: the applicant’s academic ability is determined using the principles of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
Minister Lawless added:
“The points a young person secure in their Leaving Certificate should not determine their future. If you are preparing for the Leaving Cert, or feel you’ve missed out on higher education, know that there are many pathways available to you.
“I encourage everyone to explore their options and take advantage of these opportunities.
“With the support of Education & Training Boards (ETBs) and Higher Education Institutes, learners can pursue a degree regardless of their background, family circumstances, or financial situation.”
