National College of Ireland has been awarded affiliate Accreditation for Student Athlete Support (ASAS).

Stephen Cleary, who coordinates NCI's Sports Scholarship and sports activities, said: "This is great news for NCI's high performing student athletes. They will have even more supports to assist them in balancing their academic and sporting endeavours.”

Stephen, who is Student Experience and Engagement Officer at NCI, added: “I'm proud that we've achieved this and would like to thank our Registrar, Karen Jones, for all her support, and I’d also like to thank Student Sport Ireland and Sports Ireland."

ASAS is based on providing equal opportunity to all high-performing student-athletes to combine sport and education and is grounded in the right to education. The accreditation outlines clear dual career criteria that third-level institutes must have in order to receive the accreditation. The accreditation aims to identify and establish a network of accredited institutions who support elite athletes to achieve dual career excellence by applying guiding principles.

Today four Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) were awarded the Sport Ireland Institute Accreditation for Student Athlete Support (ASAS). Dublin City University and Ulster University have been awarded full accreditation in conjunction with Student Sport Ireland, with National College of Ireland and University of Galway being named as an ASAS Affiliate recipient.

These awardees join the inaugural group of six HEI’s awarded accreditation earlier in 2022 - Queens University Belfast, Setanta College, Technological University Dublin, University College Cork, University of Limerick along with Trinity College Dublin (Affiliate level).

Sport Ireland Institute thanks all institutions and stakeholders for their attendance at the awards announcement. Sport Ireland Institute will be seeking applications for accreditation once again in 2023, and are encouraging all HEIs to work towards the ASAS standard. For more information, please contact Emma Saunders or visit Sport Ireland Institute ASAS Awards
