Free Computing Taster Course

This free one-hour session allows absolute beginners to sample the experience of learning online and programming with Java.

Jump right into watching the videos, and see how long it takes you to create your own programme, whether that is a Magic 8 Ball, a Universal Measurement Converter, or a Rock, Paper, Scissors Game.

Remember, while the video clips provided add up to a one-hour class, you will be undertaking your own ‘homework’ in order to complete the programme – you can take as much time as you need, and revisit video clips if you wish.

NOTE: We recommend undertaking this course on a laptop or desktop rather than on a phone. Coding needs a keyboard and the videos are best viewed in full screen. This one-hour taster session was originally created for the Certificate in Science in Computing at National College of Ireland, a 12-week online programme aimed at beginners who have an interest in computing but are limited on time, however this taster session also operates as a stand-alone, no-strings, no-risk introduction to the area of Java Programming, as well as providing a free example of the experience of online learning.
