Purpose of Position:

The National College of Ireland is seeking two innovative, early career developers to contribute to a funded project in the area of adaptive Learning systems. The project aims to create a new AI-enhanced learning system for large-scale workflow learning.

The successful candidates will work with an interdisciplinary team to carry out a research project exploring how applied learning theory can enhance the effectiveness of learning in the workflow. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both front-end and back-end development, experience with AI and machine learning integrations, and the ability to develop robust and scalable web applications.

Key Relationships:

  • The Full Stack Developer will be required to work closely with the Project Lead and team both in person and online. 

Key Responsibilities:

The Full Stack Developer will have the following responsibilities: 

  • The development and implementation of the proof of concept using the Java Spring Framework.
  • Researching the best approaches and methodologies for the development of the proof of concept (POC).
  • Utilise cognitive models to design and implement AI algorithms, including large language models (LLMs), into the POC.
  • Develop strategies for interfacing with LLMs, including optimizing queries and managing context for effective learning outcomes. 
  • Ensuring best design practices are used such as issues around scalability and maintaining relevance of presented data to ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of the POC.
  • Engage with project team regularly and present progress reports.
  • Presenting work at national events.

Qualifications & Experience required: 

The successful candidates must possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • A minimum of a formal degree (Level 8 or higher) in a Computer related discipline; 
  • Experience of, and commitment to developing Web Applications using the Spring Framework
  • Good coding, administrative, organisational, teamwork and communication skills;
  • Experience with large language models (LLMS) and generative AI.
  • Working knowledge of cognitive modelling processes.
  • Knowledge of evolutionary computations.
  • The pedagogical skills necessary to relay ideas to non-domain experts;
  • The ability to work as part of a team;
  • Ability to evaluate and measure success in a project.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, async programming patterns, object-oriented design, parallel programming).
  • Experience with JavaScript libraries
  • Experience of unit testing and software integration practices
Contract: 

10 Month Fixed Term Contract 

Salary: 

€55,000 per annum pro rata /€45,833 over 10 Month contract 

Annual Leave: 

24 Days per annum pro rata

Shortlisting

HR draft up the shortlisting documents and provide the initial screening to determine if a person meets the essential criteria of the competition. A shortlisting panel is generally made up of two senior grade staff members from the relevant department for which the role is being recruited.

Sharing of your data

Where you have been successfully shortlisted for a post, each interview panel member will be furnished with a copy of the relevant information of those who will be attending interview in order that they can review applications in advance of the interview process. All such information will be returned to NCI and shredded following the competition process. Some of the interview panel will be external interviewers, who are not employees of NCI but are engaged for the purpose and are strictly subject to the rules and policies of the College.

Access
